Eternity Opera Company offers a free preview of The Marriage of Figaro, ahead of 5 August opening night
After their critically acclaimed debut production of Don Giovanni in 2016, Eternity Opera is returning in August with Mozart’s irresistible comic masterpiece, The Marriage of Figaro.
The Marriage of Figaro is one of the world’s most famous operas. Set in 18th century Spain, it’s Figaro’s wedding day and he is shocked to learn that his master, the Count, is out to bed his bride-to-be, Susanna. The Countess is heartbroken by her husband’s faithlessness – but she must also contend with the adolescent desires of the page, Cherubino.
The bubbling, energetic score sees Mozart at his theatrical best, with gorgeous period costumes and designs.
The same production team from Don Giovanni has returned with Alex Galvin directing and Simon Romanos conducting, with support from the Eternity Chamber Orchestra, led by former NZ String Quartet violinist Doug Beilman. The opera will again be performed in English by a lineup of top Wellington singers, including Jamie Henare, Kate Lineham, Roger Wilson and recent Lexus Aria Semi-Finalist Emily Mwila.
Embracing a long history of operas being adapted for different audiences, Eternity Opera’s productions are presented in English, and prioritise audience accessibility, while retaining all the opera’s key elements – crowd-pleasing arias, striking sets, and lavish costumes.
As a special advance preview, at 7.00pm on Sunday 23 July, the Southern Cross Bar in Wellington will host a free concert preview. The full Marriage of Figaro cast will be in attendance for this special one-hour event.
The Marriage of Figaro’s season runs from 5-12 August at the Hannah Playhouse in central Wellington.
