Tuatara Pilsner judged best in Hong Kong International Beer Awards

Tuatara Brewing Company Limited (Tuatara) today announced that its Tuatara Pilsner had been judged best Pilsner in the recent 2013 Hong Kong International Beer Awards held in conjunction with the Restaurant & Bar Exhibition in Hong Kong.

The Hong Kong International Beer Awards were established in 2009 and over 300 beers were entered in this year’s Awards reflecting the rise in craft beer available in the city as well as the interest shown by consumers in craft beer. This year more than 16,000 people attended the Exhibition at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition between 3-5 September. The Exhibition is attended by hotel, restaurant and bar owners and managers from Hong Kong, China and Macau.

Carl Vasta, Tuatara’s Brewer, said, “The Hong Kong International Beer Awards recognise the best beers available in Hong Kong’s restaurants and bars. To have our Pilsner awarded the best is a wonderful acknowledgement in what is an important market for New Zealand craft beer.”

The panel of judges said Tuatara Pilsner was “a near perfect pilsner. It has restrained malt undertones, above which is a crisp hoppy bitterness and subtle fruit flavours”.

Winning the prestigious Award came as something of a surprise to Tuatara. “Our Hong Kong agent apparently took a six-pack of Tuatara Pilsner off the shelf and entered it in the competition and we only learnt we’d won the top prize after the event,” Carl Vasta said.

About Tuatara

Tuatara was founded in 2000 by Sean Murrie, Carl Vasta and Fraser McInnes.

It was started in response to the fledgling demand for craft beer that was not well served by the existing brewers. Tuatara focused primarily on creating great beer, with rigorous quality control. It was important to the founding shareholders that the brewery make beers of the greatest world wide styles and focused on quality above all else.

Over time the brewery won several brewing awards including best NZ brewery in 2008/09, and a host of other top awards from Japan and Australia.

Tuatara’s intention is to keep making the best beer it can, whilst helping to educate drinkers about craft beer, and what makes it so different. People often say they don’t like beer, but when given true craft product they surprise themselves by discovering the amazing flavours that craft is able to impart
