NZIOB & GIB® Awards for Excellence 2017
Entries for the New Zealand Institute of Building (NZIOB) and GIB® Awards for Excellence 2017 and Young Achiever Awards close on Tuesday, 9 May.
Established in 1994, these Awards which are the only New Zealand building industry awards that acknowledge and celebrate the people behind recently completed building projects, as opposed to the project of completed structure. The awards are open to anyone in the industry and are judged by a panel of experts from the industry.
NZIOB chief executive Malcolm Fleming said, “The NZIOB Awards provide those working in the industry with the opportunity and platform to showcase themselves, their work, company and project to the building and constructing industry, and to gain recognition from their peers.”
This year, for the first time, two NZIOB Charitable Trust scholarships each to the value of $10,000 will be announced at the NZIOB Awards ceremony. These scholarships have been established by the NZIOB Charitable Trust to recognise, encourage and financially support recipients from a trade, technical or professional role pursue a project linked to building through research, practice or professional development. The intention is that the NZIOB Charitable Trust scholarships become an ongoing feature of the NZIOB Awards of Excellence.
As in previous years, there are 12 award categories. Eight are defined by the scale and cost of the project: the Resene Projects under $2.5 million Award, the Steel Construction NZ Projects $2.5-$5.0 million Award, the Hays Projects $5.0-$10 million Awards, the Steltech Projects $10-$25 million Award, the Holcim Projects $25-$50 million Award, the Hilti Projects $50-$75 million Award, the Metro Glass Projects $75-100 million Award, and the AECOM over $100 million Award.
The other four Award categories are: the James Hardie Innovation Award, recognising innovation in the industry demonstrated within a project; the Site Safe Safety Excellence Award, recognising excellence in ‘Safety in Design’ and safety initiatives on a construction site; the BCITO Young Achiever Award, recognising achievements of industry members under 30 as of 9 May 20172107; and the GIB® Supreme Award, chosen from entrants to the project scale and cost defined categories.
This year’s Award of Excellence winners and the two NZIOB Charitable Trust scholarship recipients will be announced on Friday, 25 August at a gala evening at the Pullman Hotel, Auckland.
Malcolm Fleming said, “Past Award winners have included many of the construction industry’s high achievers, which reflects the Award’s stature, as does the fact that a number of past Young Achiever winners now hold very senior roles within the sector. The 2017 winners will likewise follow this trajectory.”

About the NZIOB & GIB® Awards of Excellence
Established in 1994, the NZIOB & GIB® Awards for Excellence are the only New Zealand Building Industry Awards that celebrate and recognise an individuals’ professional excellence in the building and construction process of a recently completed project, as opposed to recognising and awarding the project or completed structure.
The awards are open to any individual or team in the Built Environment whose personal attributes have contributed to the success of a project and who demonstrate individual or team excellence in:
- Management methods and technique;
- Degree of project complexities;
- Any innovations developed during construction process;
- Relationship with the client, architect, authorities, community and work force (employees, suppliers, subcontractors, etc.);
- Delivery of quality outcome of the completed project; and
- Project completion on time and within budget.
Simon Barnes is the Convener of Judging. Simon is a Quantity Surveyor with 39 years’ experience across a wide range of commercial, residential, industrial and retail developments.
Judging is done in two stages over a two-month period by a judging panel made up of experienced people from a cross section of the New Zealand construction industry.
